I thought the subject of the book would have made this an interesting read or I wouldn't have purchased it. However, I'm disappointed. It started off OK and I thought it'd keep going at an interesting pace, but it got silly and corny and even though it's fictional, it's stupid to have written that Gracie's husband, is going out with Britney Spears. It became weird and didn't hold my interest. Some parts were mildly funny and the rest was boring. I don't know if I'd purchase another book of hers based on this.
I'm not sure why so many reviewers have been so negative about this novel. It is what it is--An entertaining and quasi-satirical look at life in L.A.'s fast lane. Gracie Pollock is a likeable character whose husband informs her of their impending divorce over a cell phone call. The clues were there, but Gracie was too caught up in her own life to see them. We see her "recovery" and redemption as she goes through her rocky divorce and attempts to find new love. Sure, some of the characters are a bit over the top. So what if the celeb references aren't 100% accurate...This is still a fun read. Take this one too seriously, and you'll be disappointed. Take it for what it is, and you will read late into the night.
Could not follow this dysfunctional storyline until the last couple of chapters when it came together too quickly! The 2 epilogues tried to enrich the storyline, but it was too late.
Very witty
I bought this book because while Maneater wasn't a masterpiece it was fairly well written and entertaining. I hate to give bad reviews but I feel the professional reviews are so misleading that I want to save someone else their time and money. This book could have been much better if Mrs. Grazer had made it more of a satire and less of a "comedy". The "jokes" are fairly groan inducing and really should have been left out. Even better would have been to make it more of a serious tone but I know that is not her forte.

The only part of the book I find mildly entertaining are the location based comments on Los Angeles and only because I live here, but I don't really know how much someone living outside of LA cares if a book character goes to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on San Vicente Blvd.

Giving two stars instead of one because I'm actually going to finish it, and I don't have a problem not finishing a book if it's awful.
Having just finished reading a very heavy book, I needed something light and airy and uplifting. I found Starter Wife to be just what I needed. I enjoyed the characters and was quickly interested in Gracie Pollack as she began her search for her "self" ... having been dumped so unexpectedly from her Hollywood executive husband of almost 10 years..... on a cell phone! Can you imagine?
I listened to this book on the unabridged audio and Susan Ericksen gave such life and great voice to each character. This became much more than just some Hollywood wife finding herself. I found Gracie to have great substance. She was someone I would really like to know. I really did enjoy this book.

"The Starter Wife" is a fun, light, and engaging "beach" read, particularly for chick lit lovers like myself. As I'm approaching forty, I found her character sharp, witty, and highly relatable. Gigi has a great voice that makes you feel like you're sitting around the dining room table dishing the dirt with friends.

Once you get past all the Hollywood glitz and namedropping, at the heart of it she's really just a divorced 40-something who is going through an emotional upheaval, trying to raise a child, and hoping to find Mr. Right. Not exactly an enigma, right? She's someone whom most women have known, been, or will be at some point in their lives. All the rest is fun fluff that effectively keeps you roped into the story.

It's a tad longer than similar novels (hence the 4-stars), but I rarely went two pages without a hearty laugh. The humor very much jibes with the television series, so if you like the book, you'll love the show. If you like romantic comedies (heavy on the comedy), this book is definitely a winner.
