This is the most compelling horror novel I have ever read. I'm a big fan of ghost stories and cult stories. This reminds me of one of his earlier short stories involving a Mormon splinter group in Utah. I remember when I read that story I wanted a novel length version. This would appear to be that. Nevill has said that one of his favorite movies is Blair Witch, and it shows that he understood more about what made that movie work than the creators as this book follows a documentary crew investigating a supernatural cult.

What really stands out is the choice of victims and the sense of purpose and destiny to the story. The victims are not those one would ordinarily peg to be used by a cult. They are ordinary people. The protagonist isn't out to get rich, or famous, or even blow the lid off of the hidden facts of the paranormal. The story just needs to be told. This is a good motivation for a journalist or novelist.

Finally, the supernatural element and villains are the most satisfying I have found. They are well developed with clear and rational motivations. The hints are just enough to keep one reading to the next chapter. I must confess I read this the first time through in one night. I thought I would read one chapter, and I couldn't put it down. I would compare it to potato chips, but it is better as there is substantial philosophical and thematic value to this book. One could enjoy it for pleasure, but there is more to understand here.

Excellent story! Even better than The Ritual! (I enjoyed how The Ritual was actually mentioned by the film director in the story!). I really enjoyed the authors detail and the slow build of information and clues and creepiness that continued from one location and interviewee to the next. I wish the story continued even longer. It was really such an interesting story. Very engaging! I think I will read Apartment 16 next, which will be the third book I read from this author. I wish that the final couple chapters could have been longer and more detailed. Such great detail and information all the way up until the end, but the ending was so quick. I wish a lot more detail and information was given, especially from (well, you will know when you read the story!). It really makes you want to know what happens next! Very good story, especially for anyone who enjoys mystery, paranormal, ghost stories, and the type of slow-build dread and creepiness of The Blair Witch Project! -)
I found some exceptional things in this book. There was good pacing, great character development, and eerie scenes. The plot was original and interesting. However, I often found myself dreading parts of the book I knew were going to needlessly go on an on in over-detail. I was never eager to get back to the book, which was unfortunate because at it's core it is a good book and a pretty creepy horror entry. It seemed tedious at times and scenes were poorly paced. Nevertheless, reviews seem to indicate many like this and I respect that my wants/desires in a horror novel may be different than others. So it's definitely worth a read if this is your genre. But if you don't have a lot of patience it may certainly frustrate you at times.
So, there's this guy named Adam Nevill who is just going about his life, minding his own business, when he becomes fascinated with a water stain on the ceiling. The stain looks like something........it looks like something kinda scary. Nevill isn't sure what sort of scary thing it looks like, and he tries to figure it out, asking himself "What kinda scary thing is that?"

Results The Blood Friends. They are not zombies, but they are long-dead. They are not vampires, but they need blood to sustain themselves. They are not ghosts, but at night they can get into your room by coming through the walls or the ceiling. Blood Friends hate the light but, like rats, they can chew through the wiring to make sure your house is totally dark at night.

Last Days is nominally about a documentary film maker taking on a commission to make a film about a notorious cult called the Temple of the Last Days which self-destructed in a bloody ending back in 1975. Before he even realizes it, he is involved with a vicious supernatural entity. He can't fall asleep because the dreams bring the Blood Friends; he is reduced to taking cat-naps on taxis and benches in public places during the day. He rapidly becomes a human driven to the limits of existance.

Last Days was a well-paced fright-fest with plenty of action and a lot to figure out. I love Nevill's work and have a great deal of admiration for his original twists and creativity.
I always cringe a little when I see a "the next Stephen King" blurb on the cover of a book and it actually does a disservice to this book. King hasn't written a book this good in decades! This is by far the best horror novel I've read in a very long time and it recently came to me by chance. I've been on a reading binge about various cults and cult figures and Last Days showed up in my recommendations and man, I'm glad it did! Nevill's cult is well-thought and could easily fit right in with it's real life inspiration. Some might consider this book a slow burn, but the sense of rising dread and horror is palpable as the protagonist finds his sanity unraveling along with the story of the last days cult. Adam's prose is tight and literary and great description more than makes up for the slower pacing. A truly incredible read that I can't recommend enough!
